Councillor Eamonn Walsh, elected in the recent local elections to the Tallaght Central Ward of South Dublin County Council, expressed his "thanks" to vandals who defaced one of his election posters. Walsh, a Cherryfield local, recently highlighted in his recent newsletter, and in discussions with local residents, the problems of graffiti in Cherryfield area.
'Because I am from the Cherryfield area, born and bred, I have an acute awareness of the issues concerning my neighbours. Cherryfield is not, by any stretch of imagination an area which suffers from serious crime problems but there are issues regarding low-level criminality such as graffiti, which impinge upon people's enjoyment of the area. One of my large 8' x 4' (and expensive) posters was only up five days in the Cherryfield area when it was destroyed with graffiti by unknown vandals. This act of pointless vandalism simply proves the point that graffiti is a serious problem in the Cherryfield area.
Coincidentally, "eagle-eyed" locals in a different part of the Cherryfield area spotted another graffiti artist "at work" who ran away when they were challenged. The relevant information has been passed on to the Gardai who are, they say, following definite lines of enquiry in relation to the identity of the vandals in question. We must be vigilant and report any graffiti to the Gardai and stamp this out for once and for all.'
